Yes Man DVD review

Carl Allen has stumbled across a way to shake free of post-divorce blues and a dead-end job: embrace life and say yes to everything.  Take a bungee plunge? Yes.  Learn Korean? Yes. Grab the first flight to anywhere? Yes.  Win your dream girl? Yes.  Crack up fans with a feel-good, laugh-loaded comedy? Yes!

Jim Carrey plays Carl in a YEScapade about opening up to life’s possibilities - especially when those possibilities include romance with an intriguing, free-spririted musician (Zooey Dechanel).  From the director of The Break-Up comes an invitation to discover the comedy of the power of Yes.

I have to be honest and say that due to external influences, I had trouble enjoying Yes Man.  I had previously read and loved the book by Danny Wallace and was hoping that they would stick to his story as closely as possible.  Unfortunately all they seemed to do was hear the idea for the book (someone says Yes to everything), added Jim Carrey to it and then let the film write itself.  Yes, it’s mildly entertaining. Yes, it’s a bit funny but it’s just not got the heart that the book had.

They’ve clearly decided to go for a ‘zany’ approach to it and just let Jim Carrey run wild and pull as many faces as he likes which is fine but is was just hoping for more, not just another Liar Liar.

Every cloud has a silver lining and in the case of Yes Man, the DVD and Blu-ray extras are that lining.  They’ve crammed a load of special features into the Blu-Ray which just about makes this average movie a bit more enjoyable especially as they give Rhys Darby a bit more time.
