A young Carl Fredrickson meets a young adventure spirited girl named Ellie. They both dream of going to a Lost Land in South America. 70 years later, Ellie has died. Carl remembers the promise he made to her. Then, when he inadvertently hits a construction worker, he is forced to go to a retirement home. But before they can take him, he and his house fly away.
However he has a stowaway aboard. An 8 year old boy named Russell, whose trying to get an assisting the elderly badge. Together, they embark in an adventure, where they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird named Kevin.
This film really got me thinking of how nice America is getting. More so, how nice grumpy old men are getting towards the Asian community. Funny thing to say you might think after watching a Disney movie but all the way through it reminded me a little of Gran Torino. So the young lad is in a gang, but it’s the boy scouts, and the old man was a uniformed worker but at a zoo, but it just reminded me of that movie.
I was particularly keen to see this film in the new retro craze of 3D, mainly as I am from the generation that just missed out on Jaws 3D and nothing really came after. I also wanted to watch in the cinema as you get the Pixar short before hand, this gem about a tired old stork who gets his bundles of joy from a thunder cloud, and to asses how the younger members of the audience reacted.
The film was fun and fast paced but at times deeply sad and a little scary, younger children did cry, but soon it was back to laughter and giggles. As always there are jokes for all but unfortunately not so many for the grown up audience as its predecessors.
The true reaction has to be one of joy for this film, wait for at least a month or after 8 p.m. to see this to avoid chitter chatter of the kids. Enjoy.
