The Love Guru

Guru Pitka (Mike Myers in his first original character since Austin Powers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus.  he moves back to the U.S to seek fame & fortune in the word of self-help spirituality.  His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he mist settle a rift between Toronto Maple Leafs star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) and his estranged wife.

After the split, Roanoke’s wife starts dating L.A Kings star Jacques Grande (Justin Timberlake) out of revenge, sending her husband into a major professional skid to the horror of the teams’ owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) and Coach Cherkov (Verne Troyer).  Pitka must return the couple to marital nirvana and get Roanoke back on his game so the team can break the 40-year-old “Bullard Curse” and win the Stanley Cup.

 

 

Mike Myers peddles out a very substandard film centered around a very annoying new character.  The Love Guru is Myers’ worst creation yet.  I loved Wayne’s World, enjoyed Austin Powers 1 but since then his comedic talents have been slipping as each sequel got worse, and unfortunately with this movie they take a nose dive.  

The main focus of the jokes are either related to Verne Troyer’s size or some pathetic doubler entendre.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy rude jokes but when the best Myers can muster is to name the Guru’s manager as Richard Pants so he can go ‘Dick Pants and nod to the camera I think its pretty lame.

Somehow he manages to convince a bunch of major stars he’s still funny as there are plenty of cameos by Ben Kingsley, Jessica Simpson and Kanye West to name just a few, and the protagonists nemesis is played by Justin Timberlake.  However, none of these appearances make the film any better.

If you liked Myers earlier films, like I did, I urge you not to watch this and go put on Wayne’s World 1 again otherwise you’re going to be very disappointed.
