District 9
March 11, 2010
Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.
Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. [Read more]
Avatar
December 13, 2009
Avatar takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth’s energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human “drivers” have their consciousness linked to an Avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These Avatar’s are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora… the Na’vi. [Read more]

The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals born worlds apart. One, James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine), a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy, a natural-born leader in search of a cause. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), grows up on the planet Vulcan, an outcast due to his half-human background, which makes him susceptible to the volatile emotions that Vulcans have long lived without, and yet an ingenious, determined student, who will become the first of his kind accepted into the Starfleet Academy. Wolverine
April 30, 2009
Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar - as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws and a primal fury.
X-men Origins: Wolverine tels the story of Wolverine’s especially violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-men universe whose appearance in the film series have long been anticipated.
Wolverine is exactly what you’d expect it to be (that is if you haven’t got your hopes up about it), action packed, fairly well paced and chock full of mutant cameos, but unfortunately it just ends up being okay.
I really wanted to be blown away by this movie but it was just satisfactory. It tries hard and certainly throws enough set pieces and special effects into the mix but unfortunately it just misses the mark and is only a good comic book movie rather than the awesome movie it should have been.
Rather than blow a load of money on Logan fighting some Humvees and Helicopters they should have spent a bit more time on tightening up the story, give Ryan Reynolds a bit more screen time and crank up the violence from 12-A (or PG-13) to at least 15.
If you like X-men than you’re going to enjoy but unfortunately you won’t be overwhelmed by it.
