Step Brothers

Step Brothers stars Will Ferrell and John C Reilly as two spoiled guys who become competitive step brothers when their single parents get hitched.  Ferrell plays Brennan Huff, a sporadically employed thirty-nine-year-old who lives with his mother, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen). Reilly plays Dale Doback, a terminally unemployed forty-year-old who lives with his father, Robert (Richard Jenkins). When Robert and Nancy marry and move in together, Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step brothers.

As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart, these two middle-aged, immature, overgrown boys will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their parents back together. To pull it off, they must form an unlikely bond that maybe, just maybe, will finally get them out of the house.

There’s something funny about grown men acting as children and this is the root of all the jokes of Step Brothers, and do you know what it’s great.  The jokes keep coming non-stop and there are several laugh out loud moments.  This is one of those comedies where there’s a lot more to it than just the funny bits in the trailer.

The rapport between Ferrell and Reilly is electric.  The duo are obvious friends and it’s their ability to bounce of each other that makes this film as funny as it is.  The sibling rivalry between the two is great but it’s after they bond that the movie really gets going.

This is the third time Ferrel, Reilly and the director Adam McKay have collaborated on a feature film.  The first being the excellent Anchor Man, their second was Talladega Nights which wasn’t quite as good but still funny.  Anchor Man still ranks as the best of the three but Step Brothers just tops Talladega Nights in my opinion.

You can see that this was a fun movie to make and the two were allowed to improvise a lot.  This is proved through the amount of extra material that’s available on the special edition DVD and Blu Ray.  Here’s a clip of the hilarious music video made by the two for the movie that features as an extra.
