Small Town Folk
There is a place… a place called Grockleton, wherein, high on a hill-top stands the lonely Beesley’s Manor, governed by the villainous ‘Landlord’ and his lowly male counterparts (Pooch, Pike and the diesel-swilling Dobbin). Always on the look-out for new female company to help carry on the Beesley name, the Landlord keeps a watchful eye over Grockleton and anyone who dares to enter his land.
When three improbable heroes stumble unsuspectingly into the Beesley’s realm they are cruelly snared into a menacing hunt and an unstoppable frenzy of heart racing mayhem! Will the Landlord triumph and collect his ‘trophies’ (and maybe even a future bride?), or can the unlikely trio be victorious against him in his own game?..
On paper, Small Town Folk looks like it should be your bargain basement, straight to DVD, horror comedy affair. Low budget, shot on miniDV and British, it makes you almost dismiss it instantly. Well if you did you’d be missing out on a little gem.
Ok, so some of the acting is slightly dodgy and a bit of the pacing towards the end could do with tightening up but the guys behind Small Town Folk have managed to put together a genuinely funny and charismatic film that expertly blends horror and comedy.
And the best thing about Small Town Folk is the story behind its creation which just makes you want to like it more. Filmed over four years with an unknown cast of friends who all worked for free in their spare time, using just a miniDV camera, little sound equipment, no lighting (apparently one scene is lit entirely by mobile phone) and with a budget which came in under £4000, Small Town Folk is as home-made as it gets.
Oh yeah, and some where in there is a great little cameo by Warwick Davis.
Not only is this film perfect for those looking for something a bit scary and funny, its also a DVD all aspiring filmmakers should get to see what you can do with no budget.
