Pineapple Express
Lazy stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) has only one reason to visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver (James Franco); to purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and the city’s most dangerous drug lord (Gary Cole), he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene.
Dale now has another reason to visit Saul, to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him. And it is. As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they’re not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia; incredibly, the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both.
When I first saw this film in the cinema I was a bit underwhelmed. I felt like they’d tried really hard to make a good action comedy but just thought they’d missed the mark. So when I came to see this again I wasn’t expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. It turns out that this is a movie that excels on the small screen. The jokes seem to work better and even though I knew the punch-lines that were coming they just seemed to work better and had me laughing out loud.
The chemistry between Rogen and Franco is what drives this movie, and they’re both such like able losers that you can’t help but route for them (also Franco’s outfit rocks!). Many familiar faces from the Apatow films pop up in Pineapple Express (I love Ken Jeong) but the other standout performance is by Danny McBride, he’s hilarious as the indestructible Red.
So another hit by Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen, no wonder these guys are the current go to guys for comedy at the moment.
