Nick and Norah’s infinite playlist
High school student Nick O’Leary, member of the queercore band The Jerk Offs, meets college-bound Norah Silverberg and asks her to be his girlfriend for five minutes in order to avoid his ex-sweetheart, from their a twisted four leaf clover of a relationship begins.
There comes a point in any actors career where they must decide to turn down a movie or risk being type-cast as almost the same character in every movie they will do. Michael Cera had just this moment and he accepted the geeky, loser, shy adolescent dork that he has played a few times in the last 2 years. However, that is more a comment on him and not the movie.
Although this is a rom-com focusing on teens it is enjoyable, and I would imagine a world away from the permer-tan high fiving ‘hell Yeah’ of the High School Musical vomit comet. Full of bad decisions with ex girlfriends and boyfriends making the other person feel like they have been kicked in the stomach, you feel for both Nick and Norah.
But with a little help from Nick’s, mainly gay, friends and Norah coming of age and realising that the guy she is with is a real jerk, it should all lead to smiles and rainbows. However this is a great journey through a crazy New York night, with the highlight being a scene paying homage to Trainspotting, but going to a point of no return. Don’t eat or drink too much before the film or you may see it once again.
