Midnight Meat Train
A photographer propelled to explore his dark side begins tracking a subway serial killer whose brutal butchery makes for the most nightmarish images ever captured on camera in this adaptation of a short story by horror heavyweight Clive Barker. Leon Kaufman (Bradley Cooper) is just another struggling photographer until he meets art gallery proprietor (Brooke Shields) who encourages him to explore the darker side of humanity.
Leon goes against the wishes of his girlfriend, Maya (Leslie Bibb), and begins stalking notorious serial killer Mahogany (Vinnie Jones) who targets late night commuters… but finds himself lured further and further into the bowels of the subways and ultimately into an abyss of pure evil.
Next stop, death.
I have to admit that when I first heard about this movie I assumed it was going to be another average horror that should be straight to DVD. I’m pleased to say I was completely wrong, Midnight Meat Train is a visually stunning, scary thrill ride that has you gripped from the start right up to the last stop.
It has great, unique visuals which convey the horror and gore in such a way that disgusts and entertains at the same time. It’s not the same torture porn that they’re churning out every two minutes at the moment but it certainly is bloody. This is nothing less than I’d expect from Japanese director Ryuhei Kiamura, he made one of my all time favorite Japanese films in 2000, Versus, but unlike Versus, MMT has a big enough budget to achieve all the necessary special effects required in a film like this.
This is a must have for all horror fans and is definitely the best adaptation of a Clive Barker story yet. Oh yeah, if you are a horror fan, be sure to keep an eye out for a cameo by Sam Raimi’s, Ted.
