Future Cinema recreates Watchmen
On the day Watchmen came out Future Cinema staged an epic event to mark it’s release. We desperately tried to get tickets but unfortunately they sold out within minutes and couldn’t get any off our contacts. Well just to rub it in our face they’ve released some video highlights of the night and it looks awesome. Check it out below.
Future Cinema took over the arches of Weston Street under London Bridge with an epic and immersive event celebrating the world of Watchmen.
The audience arrived in downtown New York amidst a full-scale protest against Masked Vigilantes. The year was 1985; Nixon is still in power and the Soviets have invaded Afghanistan. ‘Badges Not Masks’, ‘Go Home Vigilantes’ & ‘Who Watches the Watchmen?’ read placards. As scenes began to turn nasty, Dr Manhattan strode down the street parting crowds. A loud roar sounded as a tank stormed the crowds. The Comedian jumped down from the turret to break up the riot.
Inside, exposed vigilante Walter Kovacs was holed up in the Sing Sing Prison; Ozymandias, the world’s smartest man, could be seen in his element in Studio 54 with his adoring fans; New York’s seedy underworld watched Ladies of the Night in the XXX Club; and John Osterman was found trapped in the Laboratory, his neutralised body projected in front of him as a hologram. In the Gunga Diner it was 1940s heyday of the Minutemen, who were joined by dancers and a live swing band, the Brick Lane Boogie Boys.
As anticipation grew in the two cinema rooms, out of the shadows came a familiar hero. Dave Gibbons, illustrator of the original Watchmen graphic novel, introduced the exclusive screening. Gibbons said; “(it is) absolutely incredible. I think if I was a fan of Watchmen this would be the ultimate experience, so I applaud everybody who is involved in it, it is really special.”
When the film finished, excitement and chaos once again gripped the streets with punk rockers Gallows storming the stage.
