Eden Lake

Nursery teacher Jenny (Kelly Reilly) and her boyfriend Steve (Michael Fassbender), escape for a romantic weekend away. Steve, planning to propose, has found an idyllic setting: a remote lake enclosed by woodlands and seemingly deserted. The couple’s peace is shattered when a gang of obnoxious kids encircles their campsite.

Reveling in provoking the adults, the gang steals the couple’s belongings and vandalizes their car. Determined to prevent the ruining their weekend, Steve confronts the kids, with terrifying consequences…

Eden Lake is a horror movie but not in the traditional sense.  There’s no scary looking monster or vicious animal, there’s no ghosts and very few jumpy moments but it’s sill terrifying.  I’m sure most of us have felt slightly intimidated by a group of young hoodies or chavs before (unless you’re one of them), well it’s this feeling that Eden Lake capitalizes yet still somehow it manages to make you think it could happen.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film.  Its bleak, scary and violent and shows Hollywood that the Brits can do great psychological horrors.  Forget your stereotypical hill billy, our chavs would make them fill their pants.

The tension and atmosphere of Eden Lake is intense, once it all starts to go wrong for the hapless couple it has you on the edge of your seat right until the moment the credits roll.  The performances are great and you have to wonder whether the Director just picked up most of the cast from the local council estate and told them to act natural.

So to sum up, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable horror which I’d recommend for anyone looking a British film with some bite.
