Doghouse

Six men with mid-life anxiety set out for a weekend in the country in an attempt to reconnect with their masculinity and try to cheer up Vince who is trying to get over a divorce.

Moodley is the destination, a place where the boys believe the women outnumber the men 4-1.  Unfortunately for them the girls aren’t as up for it as they hoped, they’ve all turned into man-eating cannibals, it’s a catastrophe so horrible and bizarre that a mid-life crisis turns out to be exactly what they need to survive it…

Sometimes I really like simple films.  Ones where you see the poster, trailer or read the synopsis and know exactly what you’re in for.  Doghouse is one of these movies.  It’s low budget, deliberately sexist, stupid, gory and funny as hell!

Let’s get the lazy journalism bit out of the way, it’s not as good as Shaun of the Dead but it’s much better than the recent entry to the British comedy-horror genre, Lesbian Vampire Killers.

The main problem with LVK was that it tried to be cooler, funnier and cleverer than it was, Doghouse succeeds by knowing how dumb it is and playing along with it.  It never once tries to be a smarter type of splatter flick but it does have some really clever set pieces.  As well as laughs there’s buckets of blood splashed all over the place so it will certainly please the gore fans.

Danny Dyer plays Danny Dyer (as usual) but this isn’t such a bad thing, he’s actually quite charismatic and funny in the role.  Noel Clarke is also good as Mikey and helps with some of the comic relief.  The only big name who is slightly unremarkable is Stephen Graham.  He’s not bad it’s just the other guys in the movie seem to get a better part of the action and he’s just not given as much to run with.

If you like horror-comedies and British film make sure you support the industry by snapping up a copy.

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET A SNEAK PREVIEW OF THE COMEDY HORROR ‘DOGHOUSE’, THE FILM IS FIRMLY GROUNDED IN THE ‘NO CHALLENGE IN THE CEREBRAL AREA’ HOWEVER ONCE YOU’VE ESTABLISHED THAT AND TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS ‘DOGHOUSE’ IS A VERY FUNNY FILM. THE CAST LIST READS LIKE A WHOS WHO AMONG THE UPCOMING BRIT ACTORS AND THEY ALL DELIVER, EVEN D DYER WHO IN CHARACTER (THAT’S THE SAME CHARACTER) ANOUNCED TO THE ASSEMBLED AUDIENCE ‘IT’S NO MASTERPIECE BUT IT’S FUNNY AS F*CK!’…………….. AND I CAN CONFIRM FUNNY AS F*CK IT IS! BRIT FILM IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE HANDS OF SOME VERY TALENTED YOUNGSTERS……………. WELL DONE ALL CONCERNED!

Got something to say?
