G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

August 17, 2009

An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.

Okay, two reviews for this film. Please go directly to Adult review if you are over 15.

Under 15?

Man this film is soo cool, like totally awesome and that. It is full of big explosions and mad-trix and that. The story line is rad to the power of sick and and there is massive explosions and that, and wow see it before you see anything or you will be laughed at.

Over 15? then read this.

G.I. Joe is the new spiderman, but missing the vital interesting plot, cool twists and excitement. Annoying this is the first of what appears to be many G.I.Joe films, something tells me that the iconic toy is looking for a new lease of life and they spent the advertising budget in this overly CGI filled drivel.

So are there any good bits? Yes, have you seen them before you go to the theatres? Yes. Of course every film have some of the highlights in the adverts and trailers a few months before it comes out, but GIJ has them all in there. The very cool chase whilst getting shot at for example is really one of the only highlights.

The film could have been in fact a new Transformers, or dare I say it Indiana Jones in the cool franchise stakes (mainly as the last one was such a let down). But it is the story which is just too choppy. It must have been developed by the son of the writer while playing with his G I Joe action man, it just constantly drags on. In an amazing way they manage to explain everything so well that you see the plot twist sometimes before a character has actually spoken. This all leads to the fact they made about 8 endings, and decided that DVD extras are so last year, so stitched them all together.

If your going with kids they will love it. You may want to sneak out when the lights go out and go bowling for 2 hours.

Oh, how I look forward to the 8 sequels, happy meal tie ins, new cartoon, and theme park ride. In fact the best bit was the 2 minute commercial for the toys before the start.

Public Enemies

July 6, 2009

Public Enemies is the incredible and true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger. The charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Wolverine

April 30, 2009

Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar - as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws and a primal fury.

X-men Origins: Wolverine tels the story of Wolverine’s especially violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program.  Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-men universe whose appearance in the film series have long been anticipated.

Wolverine is exactly what you’d expect it to be (that is if you haven’t got your hopes up about it), action packed, fairly well paced and chock full of mutant cameos, but unfortunately it just ends up being okay.

I really wanted to be blown away by this movie but it was just satisfactory.  It tries hard and certainly throws enough set pieces and special effects into the mix but unfortunately it just misses the mark and is only a good comic book movie rather than the awesome movie it should have been.

Rather than blow a load of money on Logan fighting some Humvees and Helicopters they should have spent a bit more time on tightening up the story, give Ryan Reynolds a bit more screen time and crank up the violence from 12-A (or PG-13) to at least 15.

If you like X-men than you’re going to enjoy but unfortunately you won’t be overwhelmed by it.

The Boat That Rocked

April 8, 2009

In 1966 - British pop music’s finest era - the BBC played just 2 hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio played rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people - over half the population of Britain - listened to the pirates every single day.

Recently expelled from school, Carl (Tom Sturridge) has been sent by his mother to find some direction in life by visiting his godfather Quentin. However, Quentin is the boss of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, populated by an eclectic crew of rock ‘n’ roll DJs.

They are led by The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) - big, brash, American, god of the airwaves, and totally in love with the music. He’s faithfully backed up by his co-broadcasters Dave (Nick Frost) - ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny; Simon (Chris O’Dowd) - super-nice and searching for true love; Midnight Mark (Tom Wisdom) - enigmatic, handsome and man of few words; Wee Small Hours Bob - the late night DJ, whose hobbies are folk music and drugs; Thick Kevin (Tom Brooke) - possessor of the smallest intelligence known to mankind; On-The-Hour John (Will Adamsdale) - the newsreader; and Angus ‘The Nut’ Nutsford (Rhys Darby) - possibly the most annoying man in Britain.
